About this Project

A few years ago I decided I wasn't reading as many books for pleasure as I would have liked. I found that I did not feel like I had the time, though, to sit and read. I was living in Philadelphia and trying to spend as much time as possible outside exploring the city and taking advantage of living there as I could. At the same time, I was a graduate student and could not afford to be buying a lot of books, new or used. I found that the Libby app for my phone, which allows you to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from your library, was the perfect solution. I started borrowing audiobooks and listening to them on my walk to school and on my trips around the city. In the years since, I have spent what amounts to days listening to books. Some highlights have included finally finishing Moby Dick , getting through Ron Chernow's Ulysses S. Grant biography, and falling in love with Colson Whitehead's The Underground Railroad and The Nickel Boys .

This project represents an attempt to track my reading habit and hold myself accountable for reaching some of my goals, both in regards to the amount I am reading and in the diversity of who and what I am reading. My hope is that this app will make me more aware of my own biases and to help me feel as if I am making some meaningful progress through my to-read list. The graphics in the first two tabs track most of these goals. The second two tabs track the books I've read, both over the last few years and those from high school and beyond that I can remember, and those I would like to read. I have included my ratings for the books I've read. However, for those I would like to read, I have generated predicted ratings using a random forest model trained on the reading history I include here. I will be updating this model each month in the hopes of generating more accurate predictions.
